DSE Exam Preparation: 5 Ways to Boost Focus

The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) is a crucial milestone for students. Preparation before the exam is not only about knowledge but also about managing focus. As the exam approaches, anxiety often increases. The following five strategies can help students stay concentrated and make the most of their study time for the final push.

  1. Plan a Study Schedule

Last-minute cramming often leads to poor concentration. Students should create a daily timetable, dividing subjects into manageable segments. A clear plan reduces stress and helps sustain focus.

  1. Build Self-Confidence

Many students blame themselves for falling behind. In reality, everyone learns at a different pace. Instead of comparing with others, focus on personal progress. Remind yourself that “starting is better than standing still,” which reduces negative thoughts and strengthens confidence.

  1. Use the Segment Study Method

The brain struggles to stay focused for long periods. Try studying in blocks of 30–40 minutes, followed by a 10-minute break. This approach prevents fatigue and maintains efficiency.

  1. Exercise and Rest Properly

Sitting for hours can cloud thinking. Short daily activities such as walking or stretching improve circulation and concentration. Adequate sleep is equally important—avoid late nights to keep energy levels high.

  1. Practice 4-7-8 Breathing

Anxiety weakens focus. Students can try the “4-7-8 breathing technique”: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat several times to calm the nervous system, reduce restlessness, and quickly regain concentration.
